Starting a business can be hectic and requires much of your time and effort as the founder.  If your foundation is not laid well the whole business can crumble after taking shape.  Nothing about business should be overlooked as that may catch up with you later.  No one started a business knowing everything but made time to research and dig deeper in knowing what to start, when to start and where to start.  The following steps can assist in setting up a company that will grow in to a big conglomerate:

Be conscious of what you know and what you have

When starting a business first find out what you know about that business and what you have as the founder to make that business a success.  If what you know is not good enough take more time to learn and know more in order to get started from informed position.  It is of no use to want to start a security company but have no clue of the regulatory framework of the industry as that may delay you starting if you do not have required qualifications or documents.  During the learning process you will also discover yourself, what you are capable of and where you need to improve in order to do that business better.

Take Compliance serious

It does not matter how fast and quick the business is taking shape, you need to prioritise compliance, be it registering the company, affiliating the product with relevant bodies or getting the required certificates.  Failing to do so may affect your business as some clients may not buy from you until you have met some requirements, doing business with you while are not compliant may put their reputation at risk therefore will walk away from you and look for your competitors.  Some clients who have been in business for long do take time to advice startups when it comes to compliance but most startups ignore the advice until the client walks away, and to win that client back after meeting the requirements may be a mammoth task.  The best way is to find out what are the requirements within the business and meet the conditions, you may not meet all but make sure the basics are covered.

Know which departments to start within the company

It is important to understand the precision that should be in place for the business to operate smoothly.  Know which department you can’t do without and which you can do without.  Know which department you can handle at a start and one that may require hiring skills to assist.   Once you know how many departments will be required, you will easily work out your operation plan and know which can come first and which does synchronise with the other and the budget thereof.  Rather know what is needed and plan for it than not knowing what is needed for business to function optimally.  Growth of any business is in planning ahead and forecasting. 

Hire the relevant skills

When recruiting employees do not compromise as a startup, look for the skills that will match the need and close the gap than having someone that will still have to learn.  You may not have time for experiment and training but have to find people that will buy into your vision and partner with you in selling the product.  If you can’t afford salaries currently, atleast be in the know of who should you hire in future than running a business with mismatched skills.

Build your brand to match its growth

The logo that you started your business with may not be relevant as your business grow.   Revisit your initial branding and interrogate it to find out if it still serve the purpose in the direction that the business is taking.  Revisiting may lead to redefining the vision, mission and your slogan.  Do not fear change and do not be too radical about it as you may lose your clients in the process.  While implementing change do check with your clients through surveys to get their feeling about the changes.  Their opinion may not stop you from making changes but will give you idea on how to change for better.  Never hold on to the template kind of a logo that may look the same as another business but invest in finding your own identity.

Invest in the growth of our business

Invest in knowledge in order to take your business to the next level and also invest financially in its growth.  Spend time in self-development for the sake of your business.   Save money to grow your business than always look for loans and investors, you must know that investors do not come on board unless they have a pie of your business and before you know it you will be holding on to the Founder title while the business is no longer within your control.

Plan for now, Plan for future, plan for next generation.  Build for posterity while prospering in that business.

I was invited to Australian Embassy by a friend for a business gala dinner, the embassy was to outline business opportunities in Australia and I had to look good that day. I pulled my best suit and the tie that I seldom wear. I drove to the gala dinner and on arrival I felt lost as most of the guests were wearing shirts, no ties, just semi formal. This made me realize that each country has a way in which they define dress code for occasions especially in the business circle.
